Minimum Roof Pitch for Roof Tiles, Spandek, uPVC and Bitumen by Brand

Minimum roof pitch for roof tiles differs by covering: M-Class ceramic tile 25°, RATTA 30°, Kanmuri tile ideal ≥30°, Onduline Classic bitumen sheet above 5°, Alderon uPVC 10°, and the minimum pitch for spandek roofing from Lysaght is only 3°. These figures come from the manufacturers' websites and technical sheets we opened on 23 October 2026. Below the minimum angle, rain can be driven in or enter through gaps. This article compares brands, converts degrees into percent and ridge height, and calculates the effect on roof area and tile count (homeX calculation).
Minimum roof pitch for roof tiles, spandek, uPVC and bitumen by brand
| Roof covering / brand | Pitch per manufacturer | Supporting data | homeX note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M-Class ceramic tile | Minimum 25°; below it water can blow in | Batten spacing 27 cm; 13.6 pieces per m2 | Manufacturer FAQ; the page also states a recommended angle of 25° | M-Class (mclassroof.id) |
| RATTA ceramic tile (PT M Class Industry) | Minimum 30° | Batten spacing 28 cm; 13.1 pieces per m2 | One manufacturer, two different angles: check the type you buy | M-Class (mclassroof.id) |
| Kanmuri ceramic tile | Ideal ≥30° (FAQ: check the roof plane pitch if water blows in) | Manufacturer FAQ; the figure is an ideal value, not a stated minimum | The Full Flat product page could not be opened (403), so that type's minimum is unverified | Kanmuri (kanmuriroof.com) |
| Onduline Classic bitumen sheet | Above 5° | First batten 20 cm then 24 cm for >5°–10°; 45 cm battens for >10°; 14 screws per sheet | Pitch below 10° needs closer battens | Onduline Indonesia |
| Alderon uPVC roofing | Minimum 10° | Length overlap 200 mm for low pitch, 150 mm for steeper; maximum overhang 100 mm | See uPVC roof prices in the homeX article | Alderon Indonesia |
| Lysaght Spandek (BlueScope Zincalume / Colorbond) | Minimum 3° | Cover width 700 mm; rib height 24 mm | Figure from the Lysaght Indonesia product page; confirm joint details with the installer | Lysaght Spandek |
| Spandek Optima (Lysaght) | Minimum 3° | Exposed-fix profile | Same as plain Spandek | Lysaght Spandek Optima |
| Degrees to percent and ridge height (6 m span) | 3° = 5.2% (ridge 0.16 m); 5° = 8.7% (0.26 m); 10° = 17.6% (0.53 m); 25° = 46.6% (1.40 m); 30° = 57.7% (1.73 m) | homeX calculation: height = 3 m x tan(angle) | Not manufacturer data | M-Class (mclassroof.id) |
| Effect on roof area (36 m2 plan, no overhang) | 10°: 36.6 m2; 25°: 39.7 m2; 30°: 41.6 m2 (1/cos angle factor) | homeX calculation | M-Class at 25°: about 540 pieces; RATTA at 30°: about 545 pieces, excluding a 5–10% allowance | M-Class (mclassroof.id) |

Data gaps: concrete tiles (e.g. Duco), sand-coated metal tiles, other spandek brands and Granity were not verified from manufacturer sources; the Kanmuri figure is an ideal value; minimum angles apply to standard products and installation conditions, while windy areas and long roof slopes may call for a steeper pitch. Confirm the type and angle with the manufacturer or installer.
How to measure an existing roof pitch
homeX analysis: measure the vertical rise and the horizontal run between two points on the roof rafter, then angle = arctan(rise / run). A rise of 0.5 m per 1 m run = 26.6°, above the 25° M-Class minimum but below the 30° RATTA minimum. This is only an estimate; a digital level is more accurate.
Low-pitch roof: spandek or tile?
For canopies or lean-to roofs under 10°, only long-sheet coverings have minimums of 3° (Lysaght Spandek) or above 5° (Onduline Classic) in the data we checked. Ceramic tiles need 25–30°. Compare tile and spandek prices in the related homeX articles before choosing.
Buyer tips
- Choose the roof covering once the rafter angle is known, not the other way round.
- For ceramic tiles, plan for 30° to be safe for both M-Class and RATTA.
- In windy areas, add pitch or fixings; ask the manufacturer.
- Calculate roof area with the 1/cos angle factor, not the plan area.
