Laminate Flooring AC Ratings Explained: AC1–AC5, Classes 21–33, How to Choose

层压地板AC耐磨等级怎么看:AC1–AC5、使用等级21–33与选购方法

Laminate flooring AC ratings are the wear-resistance classes of the European standard EN 13329, running from AC1 to AC6. For homes, AC3 is usually enough, while kitchens, hallways and pet households are safer with AC4. The AC rating does not measure water resistance, so check that specification separately.

Key Facts

What laminate flooring AC ratings measure

AC stands for Abrasion Class. A laminate sample is ground by abrasive wheels under controlled pressure until the decor layer starts to fail. The more cycles it survives, the higher its class. The test imitates footsteps, grit carried in on shoes and chairs dragged across the floor over many years.

A white paper from NALFA, the North American laminate flooring association, warns that the AC number covers only one side of quality. Stain, impact, dent and moisture resistance are tested with other methods, so an AC5 floor is not automatically safe against standing water.

AC classes and use classes

  • AC1 (class 21): very light residential use, such as a rarely used guest room. Rarely produced today.
  • AC2 (class 22): general residential use with moderate traffic, such as bedrooms.
  • AC3 (class 23): heavy residential and light commercial use; suits most rooms in a house.
  • AC4 (class 32): general commercial use; a safe choice for kitchens, hallways, stairs and homes with dogs.
  • AC5 (class 33): heavy commercial use such as shops, lobbies and short-stay rentals.

The two-digit class is the older European system. The first digit shows the type of use (2 for residential, 3 for commercial) and the second shows the traffic level.

How to choose for homes and projects in Indonesia

Match the class to the room

Bedrooms and home offices with a chair mat can use AC3. Busy family rooms, kitchens and hallways are better with AC4. For cafés, open offices, shophouses or rental apartments, consider AC4 or AC5. If one design runs through the whole house, choose the highest class needed by the busiest room.

Do not confuse it with thickness or warranty

An 8 mm or 12 mm plank thickness is not an AC rating. Thicker boards feel more solid, but scratch resistance still depends on the top layer. A long warranty on AC2 flooring also often carries broad exclusions, for example no cover in kitchens.

Plan for humid climates

The core of laminate is usually HDF fibreboard, which is sensitive to water. In tropical homes, make sure the subfloor is dry and level, use an underlay with a vapour barrier, leave expansion gaps at the walls and avoid bathrooms. For wet areas, SPC flooring or ceramic tiles are usually a better fit.

Documents to ask for

Ask for a technical data sheet showing the AC class, use class, test standard, thickness and warranty terms. When two brands are both AC4, compare thickness, core type and other test results. For larger projects, homeX can help compare quotes from several flooring suppliers and arrange delivery from its warehouse to site.
