Plywood Bonding Classes Under EN 314-2: Dry, Humid, Exterior and How to Choose

Plywood bonding classes under the European standard EN 314-2 come in three levels: class 1 for dry interiors, class 2 for humid interiors and class 3 for exterior use. The class decides whether a board can cope with kitchens, bathrooms or the outdoors. When buying, also check the EN 636 use class and the E1 formaldehyde class.
Key Facts
- EN 314-2 sets the bonding tests: class 1 dry interior, class 2 humid interior, class 3 exterior (2026-11-01, source: European Panel Federation (EPF), Plywood page (accessed 1 Nov 2026)).
- Typical adhesives: urea-formaldehyde for class 1, melamine-urea-formaldehyde for class 2, MUF or phenol-formaldehyde for class 3 (2026-11-01, source: European Panel Federation (EPF), Plywood page (accessed 1 Nov 2026)).
- Class E1 means formaldehyde release below 0.1 ppm under EN 717-1 (2026-11-01, source: European Panel Federation (EPF), Plywood page (accessed 1 Nov 2026)).
- EN 636-1, EN 636-2 and EN 636-3 cover dry, humid and exterior conditions (2026-11-01, source: GreenSpec, technical classes of wood panels (accessed 1 Nov 2026)).
- Film-faced spruce plywood usually uses phenolic films of 120, 170 or 220 g/m² (2026-11-01, source: European Panel Federation (EPF), Plywood page (accessed 1 Nov 2026)).
What plywood bonding classes are
Plywood is made from thin veneers glued with the grain of each layer at right angles and pressed with heat. Much of a board's performance depends on the adhesive. EN 314-2 defines the tests a glue line must pass for a panel to qualify as class 1, 2 or 3. The tests check whether the plies stay bonded after dry, humid or weather-like exposure.
- Class 1, dry interior: wardrobes, partitions and furniture in air-conditioned rooms. The usual adhesive is urea-formaldehyde (UF).
- Class 2, humid interior: kitchen cabinets, areas near sinks and damp rooms. The usual adhesive is melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF).
- Class 3, exterior: canopies, concrete formwork, truck floors and areas exposed to rain. The usual adhesive is MUF or phenol-formaldehyde (PF).
How it differs from EN 636 and E1
EN 314-2 rates only the bond. EN 636 is the product standard that combines bond, wood species and end use: EN 636-1 for dry, EN 636-2 for humid and EN 636-3 for exterior conditions. The European Panel Federation notes that some species are not naturally resistant enough to fungi for outdoor use unless treated, so a class 3 glue line alone is not enough.
Class E1 covers formaldehyde release, set at below 0.1 ppm under EN 717-1. For bedrooms, children's rooms and furniture in closed spaces, ask for E1 or equivalent documents.
How to choose plywood for projects in Indonesia
Ask for the class, not just a trade name
Shops often use labels such as MR or WBP. These trade terms are not always consistent between mills. Ask suppliers to state the EN 314-2 or EN 636 class, adhesive type, thickness, number of plies and emission class on the quotation.
Formwork and film-faced boards
For concrete formwork that will be reused, choose exterior-grade plywood with a phenolic film. Common film weights are 120, 170 or 220 g/m²; heavier films usually last longer through repeated pours. Seal the edges with paint after cutting.
Store it properly
Plywood of any class can warp if it sits on a wet floor or gets rained on. Stack it flat on bearers, keep it covered and away from walls. For orders with many sizes, homeX can help collect quotes from several suppliers and arrange staged delivery to site.

FAQ
Which plywood class is right for kitchen cabinets? At least class 2 (humid interior) under EN 314-2, with E1 formaldehyde emission.
Is class 3 plywood always weatherproof? Not always. Species, treatment, finishing and installation also decide outdoor durability.
What does E1 mean on plywood? E1 means formaldehyde release below 0.1 ppm under the EN 717-1 test.
