BPJS Jakon for Renovation Workers: Rp240,000 Contribution on a Rp100 Million Contract

BPJS Jakon is the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan programme for construction services workers, including carpenters, labourers and foremen. The project is registered by the service provider, cover consists of JKK and JKM, and in BPJS's official example a Rp100 million contract pays only Rp240,000. For home renovation, it is a cheap way to keep the cost of a worker's accident from falling on the homeowner.

Key Facts

Who BPJS Jakon covers

Referring to Law No. 2 of 2017, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan defines construction services workers across consulting, execution and supervision. Execution includes electrical technicians, carpenters, construction labourers, foremen and site managers. In other words, a team renovating a house, shophouse or office falls into this category as long as the project is registered.

Two benefits: JKK and JKM

  • Work Accident Insurance (JKK): treatment and compensation if a worker has an accident or work-related illness, including unlimited treatment according to medical need, homecare, a death benefit of 48 times wage and 56 times wage for permanent total disability.
  • Death Insurance (JKM): payments to heirs if the member dies from causes other than work accidents, including a death benefit, funeral costs and periodic payments for 24 months.

How much it costs

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan gives an example based on contract value: for a Rp100 million contract, JKK is 0.21% or Rp210,000 and JKM 0.03% or Rp30,000, a total of Rp240,000 for all project workers. Contributions can also be calculated from worker wage data if the provider prefers. Compared with the risk of a fall from scaffolding or an electric shock, the amount is small.

How to register a renovation project

  1. Prepare documents: the contract or work order (SPK); for individuals, a letter from the relevant agency and/or the cost estimate (RAB).
  2. Prepare the number of workers, types of work and unit wage rates (if using contract value), or worker and wage data.
  3. Register at a branch office (take the dedicated Jakon queue) or on the e-Jakon site: create an account, activate by email and fill in project data.
  4. Pay with the payment code you receive, then download or collect the membership certificate.

Tips for homeowners and small contractors

  • Ask the contractor whether the project is registered with BPJS Jakon and request a copy of the certificate.
  • Put the contribution into the cost estimate from the start so it is not skipped.
  • Register before work begins, not after an incident.
  • Also provide basic safety gear such as helmets, harnesses and work boots.
