AI Road Maintenance Indonesia: Hutama Karya Shows Si Patrol at KRTJ-16

AI road maintenance Indonesia is moving from concept to practice. At the 16th Regional Road Engineering Conference (KRTJ) in Balikpapan on 5–8 October 2026, PT Hutama Karya (Persero) and its subsidiaries presented HKA Si Patrol, which detects road damage through cameras on patrol vehicles, along with research on 3D bridge models built from laser scanning and BIM. The common thread: infrastructure upkeep increasingly depends on well-recorded data.
AI road maintenance Indonesia: how HKA Si Patrol works
KRTJ-16 was organised by the Indonesian Road Development Association (HPJI) at Swiss-Belhotel Balikpapan under the theme of road and bridge resilience to disasters and climate change, with Asbuton (Buton asphalt) as a subtheme, alongside the 127th REAAA Governing Council Meeting. At the exhibition, PT Hakaaston (HKA) showed HKA Si Patrol, an artificial-intelligence system that recognises potholes, cracks, alligator cracking, patches, rutting and faded road markings. Each finding comes with coordinates, a photo and a severity level, and is linked to the Toll Road Operation and Maintenance System (TROMS).
TROMS and LAMPS: data and asphalt quality
TROMS is an integrated platform for toll-gate transactions, traffic control, patrols, incident handling and routine and non-routine maintenance with real-time data. HKA also displayed the Live Asphalt Mixing Plant System (LAMPS), which helps keep asphalt mix production and quality consistent for overlay and patching work. HKA president director M. Rozi Rinjayadi said integrating operational data, early damage detection and material quality control helps the company choose the right treatment.
Laser scanning and BIM for bridges
In the technical sessions, Hutama Karya and PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) presented two papers. The first analysed the accuracy of an as-built 3D model of the Sei Wampu special bridge on the Binjai–Pangkalan Brandan toll road by combining Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) with Building Information Modeling (BIM). The dimensional deviation was ±5–10 millimetres, within the study's tolerance, and the model carries technical asset information for data-based maintenance planning. The second paper evaluated ESG practice at six elephant-crossing underpasses on the Pekanbaru–Dumai toll road.
Modular barrier and user app
HKA also introduced the Mahardihka Barrier (MHK-MSB-6000), a modular steel median barrier with six-metre modules resting on rubber pads without anchors. Based on the project relocation method, 516 modules covering 3,096 metres can be moved in about 350 minutes to merge two toll carriageways into an emergency runway. Teropong Publik noted that LS-DYNA crash simulations have been done, but physical crash tests and MASH 2016 certification have not. For road users, the Mozy by Hutama Karya app offers tariff information, toll-road CCTV, route planning and an SOS button.
Hutama Karya operations director III Iwan Hermawan said the KRTJ discussions would feed into improving the company's construction and asset-management practice. Director General of Highways Roy Rizali Anwar stressed risk- and lifecycle-based road management, including the use of data and technology from planning to operation.
What comes next and lessons for building projects
Interest in BIM and AI continues: AppliCAD Indonesia has scheduled a BIM & AI Conference 2026 on 28 October 2026 in Bali. For house and building projects, the lesson is simple. Automatic detection is only useful when each finding is logged with location, photo and priority, and repair materials are actually available. Contractors can start small: a standard material list per work item, daily progress photos and digital delivery records.
