Open Time vs Pot Life in Tile Adhesive: C1 C2 Meaning and Tips

Tile adhesive open time is often mixed up with pot life on site. Pot life (also called working time) is how long the mixed mortar stays usable in the bucket; open time is measured after the adhesive is trowelled onto the floor or wall—how long a tile can still be bedded and meet the required bond strength. Knowing this split, plus what C1/C2 and the E suffix mean, helps cut hollow-sounding and debonded tiles in Indonesia’s hot weather.
Key Facts
- ARDEX: pot life/working time = usable life in the bucket; open time = how long trowelled ribs stay wet enough to receive tiles; adjustment time = how long a placed tile can still be moved (2026-11-07, source: ARDEX Help Centre: pot life, working time, open time and adjustment time).
- MAPEI on EN 12004/ISO 13007: C1 tensile adhesion ≥0.5 N/mm², C2 ≥1.0 N/mm²; open time ≥20 minutes (≥0.5 N/mm²); E (extended) ≥30 minutes; fast-set F open time ≥10 minutes (2026-11-07, source: MAPEI: tile adhesives and EN 12004 / ISO 13007 classification).
- SikaCeram-180 P (Sika Indonesia): pot life ~1 hour at +30 °C; open time ~20 minutes at 25 °C/75% RH; adjustment ~20 minutes; grout after ~24 hours (2026-11-07, source: Sika Indonesia: SikaCeram-180 P product data).
- MU-400 GranitFix (TDS 9 Mar 2023): pot life 120 minutes at 35 °C; open time 20 minutes; adjustability 10 minutes; adhesion >0.5 N/mm² @28 days (EN 1348) (2026-11-07, source: Saint-Gobain Mortar Utama: MU-400 GranitFix TDS (9 Mar 2023)).
What open time and pot life mean for tile adhesive
ARDEX defines pot life (working time) as the period the mixed mortar stays workable in the pot. Once combed onto the substrate, the clock switches to open time: the interval during which tiles can still be embedded and meet the adhesion criterion. Adjustment time starts only after the tile is pressed into the fresh bed.
A common mistake with tile adhesive open time is assuming bucket-fresh mortar automatically keeps the same open time after trowelling. Heat, wind or a thirsty substrate can skin the ridges much sooner than the pot life figure on the bag.
C1, C2 and the E suffix for open time
MAPEI summarises EN 12004 and ISO 13007-1. C means cementitious; class 1 needs tensile adhesion ≥0.5 N/mm² under the required conditions, class 2 needs ≥1.0 N/mm². Both C1 and C2 require open time of at least 20 minutes with ≥0.5 N/mm². The E suffix (extended open time) raises the placement interval to at least 30 minutes. Fast-setting F products may use a shorter open time, at least 10 minutes. T limits vertical slip to ≤0.5 mm; S1/S2 cover deformability.
The 20- or 30-minute figures are laboratory acceptance thresholds, not a site guarantee. A bag marked “C2TE” means the finished adhesive was tested for that combination—still read the TDS for test temperature and tile-size limits.
Example numbers from TDS sold in Indonesia
- SikaCeram-180 P: pot life ~1 hour (+30 °C); open time ~20 minutes (25 °C/75% RH, substrate-dependent); adjustment ~20 minutes; bed thickness 2–3 mm; grout after ~24 hours; tiles need not be soaked.
- MU-400 GranitFix (TDS 9 March 2023): pot life 120 minutes at 35 °C; open time 20 minutes; adjustability 10 minutes; adhesion >0.5 N/mm² at 28 days; consumption ±5 m² per 25 kg bag at 3 mm; double buttering recommended above 60×60 cm.
Note MU quotes pot life at 35 °C and Sika at 30 °C—do not compare the two numbers without the test conditions.
Field practice for tile adhesive open time
- Mix to the TDS water ratio; do not retemper stiffened mortar unless the maker allows it.
- Spread only an area you can tile within the real open time on site (heat and wind shorten it).
- Before setting a tile, check the ridges: if they have skinned dry, scrape off and replace—do not treat a finger-touch test as proof of bond.
- For walls, prefer a T-marked product; for large areas or hot weather, consider an E-marked product and read its open-time line.
- Respect grout waiting time (Sika example ~24 hours; MU traffic time after 24 hours).

FAQ
Open time vs pot life? Pot life is usable time of mixed mortar in the bucket. Open time is the post-trowel window in which a tile can still be bedded and meet the tested bond strength.
How many minutes for standard C1/C2 open time? MAPEI’s EN 12004/ISO 13007 summary: at least 20 minutes (≥0.5 N/mm²); E class at least 30 minutes; fast-set F at least 10 minutes.
Local brand pot-life examples? SikaCeram-180 P ~1 hour at +30 °C; MU-400 GranitFix 120 minutes at 35 °C (TDS 9 Mar 2023). Always match the TDS of the bag you buy.
