Rupiah at Rp18,000 per US$ and Building Material Prices: October 2026 Data

印尼盾 18,000 兑美元与建材价格:2026 年 10 月数据

Short answer: as of 23 October 2026 the Bank Indonesia rate for the US dollar is Rp18,047 (mid rate), about 0.83% weaker than on 5 October and ranging between Rp17,880 and Rp18,052 from 5 to 23 October. According to Gapensi, in an informal survey of its members (June 2026), construction costs in the first half of 2026 rose about 6%-12%, with imported materials and steel at 10%-15%. We found no official national data separating the exchange-rate effect from other factors such as diesel prices, so this article presents sourced figures, not a price forecast. Every figure is dated; homeX analysis is marked.

BI rates and "mid" come from the BI rate table at Ortax Data Center (sell and buy per day; daily mid rate rounded), accessed 23 October 2026; the range is calculated by homeX over 15 trading days from 5 to 23 October (lowest mid Rp17,880 on 8 October, highest Rp18,052 on 19 October). The Rp18,022 close on 21 October is from Bloomberg as reported by Kompas, so it differs from the BI rate of the same day (mid Rp18,006). The Gapensi figures come from a Kontan interview with Gapensi BPP Deputy Secretary General III and are an informal member survey, not official statistics; the data is dated June 2026 and does not necessarily describe October. The Public Works Minister statement is quoted from detikFinance (11 June 2026).

How far the rupiah has moved (homeX calculation)

From a BI mid rate of Rp17,898 on 5 October to Rp18,047 on 23 October, the rupiah weakened by Rp149 or 0.83%. In June Gapensi put the rupiah at Rp17,700-Rp18,000 per US dollar; compared with the Rp18,000 upper bound the BI mid rate on 23 October is 0.26% weaker, and compared with the Rp17,700 lower bound 1.96% weaker. This is a rough comparison because the June range is not the same daily rate as the BI rate. According to Kompas, an analyst judged that pressure on the rupiah on 21 October was driven more by external sentiment and MSCI-related concerns, and that the effect of BI holding the BI-Rate at 5.75% on the rupiah was limited.

What it means for building material buyers (homeX analysis, not data)

Gapensi names steel, MEP components, special cement and instrumentation as materials with high import content, and the industrial diesel increase as a factor with a direct effect on production and distribution costs of construction materials. homeX analysis: residential buyers are most sensitive to materials with heavy import content or heavy transport, while worker wages move more slowly; so compare prices by category, not one percentage for everything. As an illustration, in our red-brick wall cost estimate (article 207) materials per m² are Rp104,846: if material prices rise 10%, the wall cost rises Rp10,485 or 5.9% of Rp178,331; for an AAC wall, materials are Rp81,922 and a 10% rise adds Rp8,192 or 5.7% of Rp143,165. This is a calculated scenario, not a price forecast.

Data we did not find

We found no official October 2026 data on a national building material price index that separates the exchange-rate effect, and we do not prove a causal link between the exchange rate and store prices. The Gapensi figures and the Public Works Minister statement are dated June 2026, while the exchange rates are dated October 2026. For specific product prices, see our dated price articles; store prices can change without notice.

Buyer tips

  • Ask for written quotes with a price validity period, especially for steel, cable and MEP fittings.
  • Buy materials in stages following the work schedule rather than all at once if prices change often; also weigh storage costs.
  • For lump-sum contracts, ask whether the price is fixed or has a material escalation clause.
  • Compare prices at several stores and the date of the data before ordering.
