Manufacturing PMI 52.4 and IKI 51.93 (Sep 2026): What It Means for Building Materials

制造业 PMI 52.4 与 IKI 51.93(2026 年 9 月):对建材的意义

Indonesia’s manufacturing PMI for September 2026 rose to 52.4 from 49.8 in August (S&P Global survey, released 1 October 2026), back above the 50 line that separates expansion from contraction. Around the same days the Industry Ministry released the September 2026 IKI at 51.93, still expansion but down 0.37 points from 52.30 (Antara, 30 September 2026). Both rose on orders, but the IKI recorded lower output and cited logistics costs, a wait-and-see domestic market and El Nino. For building-material buyers: neither indicator contains cement, ceramic or steel sales figures; what is relevant is the non-metallic minerals sub-sector (expanding in the IKI) and input cost pressure that the PMI says eased. All figures are dated; homeX interpretation is marked as analysis, not data.

PMI figures from Katadata and The Jakarta Post (S&P Global survey, 1 October 2026); IKI figures from Antara (Industry Ministry release, Wednesday 30 September 2026), Industry.co.id and Kompas. Kompas wrote that the IKI was released on Thursday 1 October while Antara and Industry.co.id wrote Wednesday 30 September; we follow Antara. The August values for the output index (55.10) and inventory index (46.02) are homeX calculations from the reported changes, not directly quoted figures. The PMI and IKI are two different indices with different methods, so the numbers are not directly comparable. Both measure general factory activity, not building-material sales or prices; we found no building-material sales data published for the same period. The October releases had not been published when this article was written.

Sub-sectors closest to building materials

Kemenperin named five sub-sectors in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and textiles group (IKFT) that expanded in September 2026: textiles, apparel, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and traditional medicine, and non-metallic mineral products. Non-metallic minerals is a broad statistical category; we cannot tell from the reports how much of it is cement, ceramics or glass. The contracting sub-sectors include wood and wood products and cork; rubber and plastics; electrical equipment; and machinery and equipment. The reports do not mention basic metals or steel, so we draw no conclusion for rebar.

Cost pressure and output prices per the PMI

Per S&P Global (cited by Katadata), manufacturing input price inflation slowed to a six-month low in September, though still above the survey’s long-run average, and output prices rose at the slowest pace in six months. Manufacturers raised input purchases at the fastest pace since February. The Jakarta Post adds that the IKI cited rising logistics and fuel costs. This is general factory data; retail building-material prices in stores can differ, so check current prices in our price articles.

What it means for buyers and contractors (homeX analysis, not data)

homeX analysis, not data: the PMI and IKI both show industrial orders rising in September while input cost pressure eased; that combination does not automatically mean building-material prices will fall or rise. The two indicators also differ on output and inventories, and Kemenperin said stocks were piling up although the inventory index of 45.45 is below 50 (the contraction zone); we do not interpret this further. Practical approach: compare prices by brand at stores and factories on the purchase date, ask for written quotes with a validity period, and watch next month’s PMI and IKI releases. Buyer tips

  • Treat the PMI and IKI as factory sentiment indicators, not store prices; check building-material prices on the purchase date.
  • Read values above or below 50 as expansion or contraction, and look at the sub-sectors, not just the headline number.
  • For large purchases ask for written quotes with a validity period so sudden price changes do not hurt.
  • Watch next month’s S&P Global PMI and Kemenperin IKI releases to see the direction of orders and costs.
