Planned Mandatory SNI for Light Steel Profiles and Corrugated Roofing: SNI 8399 and 9374

印尼拟对轻钢龙骨和波纹屋面板实施强制SNI:SNI 8399与SNI 9374要点

Mandatory SNI light steel rules are getting closer in Indonesia. A plan to make SNI compulsory for light steel profiles (SNI 8399:2025) and for corrugated roofing and wall sheets made of metal-coated steel (SNI 9374:2025) was presented to manufacturers, distributors and importers in October 2026. We have not found an effective date in an official regulation yet, but contractors and building supply stores should start checking certificates and product markings now.

Key Facts

  • A national outreach webinar on the planned mandatory SNI for SNI 9374:2025 (corrugated roofing and wall sheets of metal-coated steel) and SNI 8399:2025 (light steel profiles) was held on 2 October 2026 (2026-09-15, source: Vertex Global Indonesia, 15 Sep 2026 (outreach webinar)).
  • SNI 8399:2025 covers C, U, Z and TH profiles with a minimum nominal thickness of 0.40 mm and SNI-certified coated steel as base material (2026-06-15, source: BBSPJIKB, Ministry of Industry, 15 Jun 2026).
  • Mandatory SNI for a number of steel products took effect on 20 May 2026; IISIA asked for mandatory SNI to extend to roofing, wall sheets, light steel and floordeck (2026-05-13, source: IISIA, 13 May 2026).
  • SNI for zinc-coated steel has been mandatory since 2008 and for aluminium-zinc-coated steel since 2009; the ministry counted 11 active SNI certificates for domestic and 7 for imported products (2026-02-23, source: ANTARA, 23 Feb 2026).

What is being planned

The raw material of light steel, zinc-coated (BjLS) and aluminium-zinc-coated (BjLAS) steel sheet, has long been under mandatory SNI. According to ANTARA, the Ministry of Industry says BjLS has been mandatory since 2008 and BjLAS since 2009, updated by Ministerial Regulation 67/2024 issued in November 2024. Finished products such as roof truss profiles and corrugated roofing sheets, however, have remained under voluntary SNI.

That gap is what the plan aims to close. On 13 May 2026 the steel industry association IISIA welcomed mandatory SNI for several steel products from 20 May 2026 and called for standards to be harmonised from upstream to downstream, including roofing, wall sheets, light steel and floordeck that still lack mandatory SNI. Certification body Vertex Global Indonesia then held an outreach webinar on the "Planned Mandatory SNI" for SNI 9374:2025 and SNI 8399:2025 on 2 October 2026.

The push is not new. In 2024 the Indonesian Roll Former Association (ARFI) urged that the light steel profile SNI be made mandatory after a classroom roof at SMPN 2 Greged in Cirebon collapsed and injured six students.

Key points of SNI 8399:2025

The Ministry of Industry's BBSPJIKB centre summarises the main points of the standard:

  • Four profile shapes: C for roof, wall and floor framing; U for wall framing; Z and TH (top hat) for roof systems.
  • Base material must be BjLS, BjLAS, BjLAM or BjLSAM steel meeting SNI, proven by a certificate.
  • Minimum nominal thickness of 0.40 mm, plus rules on coating type and minimum coating mass.
  • Dimensional and shape tolerances (bow, twist, camber) and minimum weight per metre.
  • Markings must show the brand, profile code, profile height, nominal thickness, and coating type and mass.

Impact on contractors and building supply stores

If mandatory SNI light steel rules are enacted, uncertified profiles and roofing would no longer be allowed on the market after a transition period. Older stock usually gets time to sell through, as with other steel rules, but the details depend on the ministerial regulation. Steps to take now:

  • Ask suppliers for the SNI certificate of the base steel and, where available, an SNI 8399 certificate for the profile.
  • Check the print on each length: profile code, thickness and coating mass should be clearly legible.
  • Write the agreed thickness into the written quotation so BMT and TCT are not confused.
  • Watch the Ministry of Industry website for the official regulation number and date.
