AI and BIM in Construction: BuildX 2026 Jakarta Puts Project Data in Focus

建筑业AI与BIM:雅加达BuildX 2026聚焦项目数据决策

AI and BIM in construction are now being discussed as practical tools for project decisions rather than as buzzwords. At BuildX 2026 in Jakarta on 28 October 2026, more than 200 architects, interior designers, consultants, contractors, developers and building material suppliers looked at how data can guide choices on facades, materials and green building. For suppliers the message is clear: clean product data will increasingly decide whether a material gets specified.

Key Facts

What BuildX 2026 covered

BuildX 2026 was organised by Vastu Chatra Asia, Ivosights and Diginex conXperience. According to SindoNews, the programme was built around three questions. The Construction pillar asked whether buildings perform, through facades, climate, materials and green building. The Culture pillar asked whether buildings fit their place, treating Nusantara architecture as design knowledge. The Intelligence pillar asked whether the building process can learn, through AI, BIM and data.

Event chair and Vastu Chatra Asia co-founder Bagas D. Bawono described BuildX as a journey of ideas: understanding people and place, turning that into high-performing buildings, and then using intelligence to keep improving them. The event was backed by IAI Jakarta, HDII, Perkindo, PERAFI and SAMA Indonesia, and sponsored by dozens of companies, including makers of paint, aluminium, door hardware and facade panels.

AI and BIM in construction: from model to decision

BIM keeps building information in one model: geometry, quantities, specifications and schedules. When that model is complete, AI and data analysis can compare design options, estimate material quantities or detect clashes between trades before work starts on site. Everything depends on the quality of the input. If material data is incomplete, for example with unclear sizes, weights, grades or certificates, the analysis cannot be trusted.

The government is pushing in the same direction on the skills side. In May 2026 the Directorate General of Construction Development at the Ministry of Public Works and Glodon Indonesia launched the AI x 5D BIM Master Challenge 2026. Kimron Manik, Director of Construction Workforce Competence and Productivity, said Indonesian construction players have to keep up with digital technology, which makes upgrading workforce skills essential. The challenge focuses on project cost management, the fifth dimension of BIM.

What it means for material suppliers and buyers

For suppliers, digitalisation means technical specifications must be ready for designers to use. Data sheets, drawings, SNI certificates, unit weights and packaging details should be available in a format that can go straight into a model or a bill of quantities. Products with complete data are easier for consultants to compare and propose.

For contractors and owners, the benefit lies in more accurate quantities and better-planned procurement. Materials can be ordered in stages to match the work schedule, so site storage does not overflow and the risk of running short falls.

  • Ask for technical data sheets and certificates before a material is specified.
  • Use the same units in the BIM model, the cost estimate and supplier quotes.
  • Record supplier lead times and stock capacity as procurement data.

homeX, an Indonesian one-stop platform for building materials and furniture with a showroom, warehousing and delivery, organises product and cost data from many suppliers so buyers can compare material options for their projects faster.

FAQ

When and where was BuildX 2026 held? BuildX 2026 took place in Jakarta on Wednesday 28 October 2026, with more than 200 participants and 11 speakers.

How do AI and BIM relate to material selection? At BuildX 2026 the Intelligence pillar covered AI, BIM and data for project decisions, while the Construction pillar dealt with facades, materials and green building. A model with complete data makes it easier to compare material options.

What is the AI x 5D BIM Master Challenge 2026? A competition launched in May 2026 by the Ministry of Public Works construction directorate and Glodon Indonesia to build digital construction skills, including project cost management.
