Gypsum Board Types Under EN 520: What A, H1, F, D, I and R Mean

石膏板EN 520类型代号:A、H1、F、D、I、R分别代表什么

Gypsum board types under EN 520 are marked with letters: A for standard board, H1/H2/H3 for reduced water absorption, F for a core that holds together at high temperature, plus D, I, R, E and P for special functions. Letters can be combined, for example DFH2IR. For bathroom and kitchen ceilings choose at least H1 or H2, but remember that moisture-resistant board is still not waterproof.

Key Facts

What each letter means in gypsum board types EN 520

EN 520 is the European standard for paper-faced gypsum plasterboard. It does not group boards by brand but by performance. Each performance has a letter, and one board may meet several at once.

  • A – standard board with a face that can take plaster or decoration. This is the everyday ceiling and partition board.
  • H1, H2, H3 – boards with additives that reduce water absorption. A lower number means lower absorption.
  • F – core with mineral fibres or additives so that it holds together at high temperature. Used in fire-resistant systems.
  • D – controlled density, useful for acoustics and strength.
  • I – harder surface, suitable for corridors and impact-prone areas.
  • R – higher longitudinal and transverse breaking strength.
  • E – sheathing board for external walls, not for decoration and not for permanent weather exposure.
  • P – base board intended to receive gypsum plaster.

Reading combined codes

A code such as DFH2 means the board has controlled density, holds together at high temperature and absorbs at most 10% water. DFH2IR adds a hard surface and higher strength. On data sheets the code usually appears next to the standard number.

Moisture-resistant is not waterproof

H boards (often green) only slow down water uptake. Guidance summarised by Binaaline stresses that they are not enough for the direct spray zone of a shower; for tiled shower walls, cement board or fibre-cement board with a waterproofing layer is safer. For bathroom ceilings, H1/H2 boards are commonly used together with good ventilation.

Fire boards: a system, not just a board

Type F boards, or Type X under the American standard ASTM C1396, are designed for fire-resistant systems. But a fire rating such as 60 minutes is the result of testing the whole system: board, framing, screws, number of layers and joints. If a garage wall or electrical room needs fire resistance, follow the manufacturer's system detail instead of simply swapping the board.

How to choose for a home project

  • Bedrooms, living rooms, general ceilings: Type A.
  • Bathroom and kitchen ceilings and humid enclosed terraces: H1 or H2.
  • Garage separation or rooms needing fire protection: Type F in a tested system.
  • Shophouse corridors, schools and impact-prone areas: Type I or a DFH2IR combination.

When comparing quotations, ask for a technical data sheet showing the EN 520 or ASTM C1396 type and board thickness. homeX, an integrated building materials and furniture platform in Indonesia with showroom, warehousing and delivery, can help prepare gypsum board options and accessories for your project.

FAQ

What is the difference between standard and moisture-resistant gypsum board? Standard board is Type A. Moisture-resistant board is Type H1, H2 or H3, with total water absorption limits of 5%, 10% or 25%.

Can H1 board be used on shower walls? Not recommended in the direct spray zone. Use cement or fibre-cement board with waterproofing.

What does DFH2IR mean? Controlled density (D), high-temperature core cohesion (F), water absorption ≤10% (H2), hard surface (I) and higher strength (R).
