Anti-Alkali Primer for New Walls: Moisture Limits 12%, 17% and 22% per TDS

新墙抗碱底漆:Nippon 12%、Dulux 17% 与 22%、Jotun 未给含水率限值

Anti-alkali primer for new walls is used because fresh plaster and cement are alkaline and damp; a topcoat applied too early can fade, blotch or blister. A question rarely answered at the shop: when may the wall be painted? This article compares the technical data sheets (TDS) of four manufacturer primers: Nippon Paint 3-IN-1 Anti-Alkali Primer Sealer, Dulux Professional Diamond Sealer A1000, Dulux Alkali Killer (solvent-based) and Jotun Jotashield Primer. The moisture limits turn out to differ, and one brand does not state any. Data as of 23 October 2026.

Nippon 3-IN-1 Anti-Alkali Primer Sealer: wall limitsAvoid painting if wall pH is above 9 and moisture above 12% (Protimeter) or above 6% (Elcometer); for new walls optimum condition generally takes 1 monthTSDS 3-IN-1 Anti-Alkali Primer Sealer (code 1.2201, no issue date)The only one of the four documents that gives a wait for new walls (1 month) and two instrumentsNippon Paint Indonesia

Dulux Professional Diamond Sealer A1000Water-based alkali-resistant sealer for new interior masonry walls; a new wall is fit to paint when moisture is below 17% (Protimeter) and pH below 9 (pH paper); repainting not recommended above 17% and/or pH above 9; 20 litre pack; spread 10–11 m²/litre on smooth average-porosity surfaces; ready to use without thinning; roller, brush or conventional sprayDulux Professional product page (not a PDF TDS)homeX calculation: 100 m² / 10–11 = 9.1–10 litres per coat. Dulux Alkali Killer (solvent-based)For brick, plaster, cement and asbestos, interior and exterior; tolerates damp walls but not saturated surfaces; do not apply above 22% moisture (Protimeter), as trapped moisture causes blisters; 2.5 and 20 litre packs; volume solids 38%; theoretical spread 8–10 m²/litre; dry film 40–45 µm; recoat 4–5 hours (30°C); thin with Dulux Thinner A850-41 or white spiritDulux Alkali Killer data sheet (dated August 2014)homeX calculation: 100 m² / 8–10 = 10–12.5 litres per coat. Source: Nippon Paint TSDS 3-IN-1 Anti-Alkali Primer Sealer (code 1.2201), the Dulux Professional Diamond Sealer A1000 product page, the Dulux Alkali Killer data sheet (August 2014) and the Jotun Jotashield Primer TDS (23 January 2025). Data gaps: the Nippon TSDS has no issue date; Dulux A1000 data comes from a web page, not a PDF TDS; the Jotun TDS has no moisture or pH limit; we did not read any national paint-application standard and did not compare performance between brands (no independent test); moisture limits are measured with different instruments so they cannot be compared directly; other products (Avitex, Mowilex, Catylac, Propan) were not read; prices not checked. Data as of 23 October 2026.

Why the 12%, 17% and 22% figures differ

homeX analysis, not a manufacturer claim: the documents do not explain the reason. What the text shows: Nippon gives two figures for two instruments (12% Protimeter and 6% Elcometer), so percentages from different instruments are not comparable; Dulux A1000 is water-based for new interior walls; Alkali Killer is solvent-based and positioned as a primer usable on slightly damp walls. If you do not know the contractor instrument, use the strictest figure (12% Protimeter) as a benchmark and ask for readings to be recorded with dates.

Primer needed for 100 m² (theoretical)

homeX calculation for one coat from the theoretical spread: Nippon 8.3–10 litres; Dulux A1000 9.1–10 litres; Alkali Killer 10–12.5 litres; Jotashield Primer 9.3–12.5 litres. Rough plaster absorbs more, so real figures are usually above these; Jotun itself says spread depends on texture, porosity and loss. The full paint cost per room is in the related articles below.

Buyer tips

  • Ask the contractor to measure wall moisture and pH and record the instrument and date before priming.
  • Tell the shop whether it is a new wall or a repaint; the Dulux documents distinguish between them.
  • Do not mix systems: use the primer and topcoat recommended in the TDS (Nippon: not alkyd; Jotun: 1 primer + 2 topcoats).
  • Keep photos of the pack label and batch number for warranty claims.

FAQ

How long must a new wall wait before painting? The Nippon 3-IN-1 TSDS says optimum condition of a new wall generally takes 1 month. The Dulux and Jotun documents we read give no wait time; Dulux sets wall conditions (moisture and pH) only.

What moisture limit does the TDS give before painting? Nippon: above 12% (Protimeter) or 6% (Elcometer) is avoided, together with pH above 9. Dulux Diamond Sealer A1000: below 17% (Protimeter) and pH below 9. Dulux Alkali Killer: not applied above 22% (Protimeter). Jotun Jotashield Primer: no written limit.

How many litres of primer for 100 m² of wall? One coat, theoretically about 8.3–12.5 litres depending on the product (homeX calculation from the TDS spread rates), before waste and absorption by rough walls.
